The perpetrators observe: which houses stay dark in the evening, which letterboxes are overflowing, which driveways are never used, at what time the street is empty. A <strong>security patrol<\/strong> acts precisely on these signals \u2014 it makes the neighbourhood readable differently, and much less predictable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Wemmel and the Brussels periphery, the layout lends itself to this: residential estates, back gardens, side access points, and the immediate proximity of major roads that allow the scene to be left in a matter of minutes. It is this last point that makes regular human presence more deterrent than equipment alone.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a residential security patrol really is<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not a vehicle that crosses the street at a set time. A useful patrol relies on three principles.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Irregular passages.<\/strong> Fixed schedules can be learned in a few days. The value of a patrol lies in its unpredictability.<\/li><li><strong>Defined control points.<\/strong> Each passage follows a precise list: rear access, garages, gates, dark areas, and properties reported as unoccupied.<\/li><li><strong>A written report.<\/strong> Anomaly noted, time, location, follow-up action taken. Without reporting, a patrol is unverifiable.<\/li><\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The security guard gets out of the vehicle. It is the walking patrol \u2014 checking a gate, shining a light on a side access, walking up a driveway \u2014 that creates the deterrent effect, not the drive-by.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The periods when the risk increases<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certain periods concentrate attempts: school holidays, long weekends, the winter weeks when night falls before people return from work, and the year-end period. Official crime figures per municipality are published by the federal police and can be freely consulted, which allows a neighbourhood council to base its decision on real data rather than an impression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An effective measure is therefore not necessarily permanent. Many neighbourhoods opt for increased patrols during targeted periods, and a scaled-back regime the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monitoring of a home during an absence<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the most frequent request before an extended absence. The principle is to remove visible signs that a property is unoccupied: checking access points, collecting visible mail, monitoring shutters and lighting, visits at varying times, and immediate alerts in the event of an anomaly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This service combines naturally with\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/europeansecurity.eu\/en\/mobile-patrouille-gardiennage-mobile\/\">call-out after alarm<\/a> if an alarm goes off, a security guard goes to the premises to verify the alert, rather than having a neighbour or relative get involved in an unknown situation.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Share between neighbours<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A patrol ordered by a single household has a cost that is hard to justify. Ordered by a street, a housing estate or a neighbourhood association, it becomes proportionate: the same patrol covers several dozen addresses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This pooling of resources also changes the quality of the service. The officer knows the homes, spots anything out of the ordinary, and their report becomes a collective tool for the neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What a security guard company can do \u2014 and what it cannot<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Property surveillance activities fall under the guarding regulated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/europeansecurity.eu\/en\/loi-02-10-2017\/\">Act of 2 October 2017<\/a>, under the supervision of the FPS Home Affairs, and may only be carried out by an authorised company employing agents who hold an official identification card.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We need to be clear about the limits: <strong>a security guard is not a police officer<\/strong>. It observes, secures and alerts. It does not exercise the powers of a police force and does not intervene on the public highway in the manner of a police patrol. A private patrol complements the work of the local police, it does not replace it \u2014 and any service provider that suggests otherwise is misleading you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moreover, the good practice is to inform the local police zone of the existence of the system, and to systematically report any incidents observed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do the agents enter the property?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only within the perimeter agreed with the owner and described in the agreement. Specific instructions are set in advance, property by property.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens if an anomaly is found?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The security guard secures the surrounding area, notifies the police services if the situation warrants it, informs the designated contact person, and records the facts in their report.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are patrols possible both day and night?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. The risk is not limited to nighttime: some residential burglaries occur during the day, when homes are empty.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do you already need to have an alarm?<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, the two are independent.
