When a business decides to step up its security, the first question is not \u00abhow many guards?\u00bb but \u00abwhat type of presence?\u00bb. A uniformed security guard<\/strong> and one store detective<\/strong> exercising two distinct professions, produce two different effects and do not address the same problems. Choosing one for a need that falls under the other means investing in a solution that will not deliver the expected results.<\/p>\n

Two professions, two desired effects<\/h2>\n

The uniformed officer acts before the incident<\/h3>\n

The uniform is visible. That is precisely its purpose: it influences the visitor's behaviour even before an act is committed. A static guard security officer<\/a> screens entries, directs customers, monitors sensitive areas, intervenes in cases of anti-social behaviour and reassures staff. Their visible presence discourages opportunistic acts and reduces tension at the tills or in the fitting rooms.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, an organised author spots the uniform and adapts their behaviour: they wait, move to an uncovered aisle, or come back at another time. The uniform effectively protects what it covers, and only what it covers.<\/p>\n

The plain-clothes inspector acts during the incident<\/h3>\n

The\u2019store detective<\/a> works in plain clothes, among the customers. His role is not to deter: he observes, identifies atypical behaviours, follows a trail, and records offences. His work begins where deterrence has failed.<\/p>\n

This is the ideal solution for repeat thefts, organised gangs, targeted disappearances of specific product lines, and situations where shrinkage remains high despite a visible presence. It is also the one that makes it possible to understand comment<\/em> the theft occurs \u2014 through which aisle, at what time, using which method \u2014 and therefore to correct the layout and procedures.<\/p>\n

What each device changes on the shop floor<\/h2>\n

The uniformed officer has an immediate and wide-ranging effect, but with little selectivity. The plain-clothes inspector has a slower and more targeted effect, which produces actionable intelligence. A uniform reassures customers and staff; an inspector cannot be seen and does not alter the atmosphere of the store.<\/p>\n

One point is often underestimated: the store detective also contributes to staff safety. Spotting an organised team before an employee challenges them alone avoids situations that escalate.<\/p>\n

The Belgian legal framework, to be known before deciding<\/h2>\n

In Belgium, both functions fall under security guard activities regulated by the Act of 2 October 2017<\/a>, under the supervision of the FPS Home Affairs. They may only be carried out by an authorised company, using agents holding an official identification card.<\/p>\n

One point needs to be stated clearly, because it is the source of frequent misunderstandings: a security guard is not a police officer<\/strong>. It does not have the coercive powers of a police service, and the conditions under which it can intervene regarding an individual are strictly regulated. A provider that promises you more is putting you and your staff at risk.<\/p>\n

This is also why the store's internal procedure matters just as much as the system itself: who calls the police, who writes up the report, where the person concerned waits, how the footage is stored.<\/p>\n

How to choose according to your business<\/h2>\n

Some practical guidelines, drawn from common situations:<\/p>\n
